Santa was great to Judge Karen Francis-Mills this holiday season as her courtroom strip Judge Karen's Court has been picked up for a sophomore season by Litton Entertainment with renewals from Chicago's WCIU and New York City's WPIX. In addition, WCIU upgraded Karen last month from an overnight slot to 9 and 9:30 a.m. on its weekday morning schedule, replacing Jerry Springer reruns, which moved to 3:30 a.m., at least for the moment (new Springer episodes still air at 11 a.m.)
Judge Karen's Court was initially syndicated by Sony Pictures Television (with the title Judge Karen) during the 2008-09 season, but hastily dropped the series after Sony decided the series no longer fit its programming portfolio (i.e. we got rid of all the courtroom shows so we can focus on hawking shows from Harpo Studios.) Despite the cancellation, Karen did decently well (for syndication daytime standards, at least) in households and key female demos.
While the series has averaged a lowly 0.6 household rating, the series has actually been competitive with other higher-profile freshmen first-run series, including Sony's The Nate Berkus Show and Swift Justice with Nancy Grace, despite airing in fewer markets. The series is also doing better than Litton's failed court entry from last season, Street Court. Judge Karen's Court has been renewed on 60 stations, including Sinclair Broadcasting, which helped spearheaded the drive to get Karen back on the air. Sinclair renewals include include WCGV/Milwaukee and WUCW/Minneapolis-St. Paul.
